Tiwi Islands

The Tiwi Islands are located 80 kilometers North of Darwin in the Northern Territory. There are 2 islands, Melville and Bathurst island. Tiwi Islands has a population of 2500 people. Most residents speak Tiwi, their national language. In 1942 a radio shack detected that Japanese Bombers were coming to invade Darwin. Luckily they were able to detect this 20 minutes prior so they could evacuate! In the Tiwi Islands they have beautiful art. Art is a part of their culture and they are recognised for their unique style of art. Footy is an extremely popular sport in the Tiwi Islands. They hold their grand final in March. There are 7 teams despite their population of only 2500 people. Nguilla Football League was formed in 1968. The seven teams are Imalu, Walama, Pumarali, Tapalingo, Tuyu and Ranku Football Club and The Muluwarri Magpies. Fun Fact, The temperatures are high all year round with 25 to 36 degrees in the wet season and 19 to 30 degrees in the dry season. The Tiwi Islands are a great place to go if you want some beautiful weather and extravagant beaches.
