Register now for kindergarten in 2024

Tuesday, 11 April 2023

Council kindergarten services are open for 2024 registrations. Next year, Council will offer 15 hours a week for both three- and four-year-olds.

Proposed session times for next year have been published on our website so families can select the sessions that best suit them.

Each year we plan our session times by looking at registration and enrolment numbers over the last few years, as well as feedback from families about the length and type of sessions they’d like to see.

Our focus is ensuring all families have access to high-quality services that are also sustainable and efficient. To do this, sometimes we make changes such as combining smaller sessions into bigger groups or offering mixed-age groups like those offered by many local independent kindergarten providers.

Based on the registrations we receive, sometimes these proposed sessions change.

In 2024, Council won’t offer any kindergarten services at the following sites due to reduced demand:

  • Alice Johnson Kindergarten

  • Goodwin Estate Kindergarten

  • Taylors Lane Kindergarten

  • West Gully Kindergarten

This is in addition to the sites already not operating in 2023:

  • Berrabri Kindergarten

  • Birch Street Kindergarten

  • Park Ridge Kindergarten

  • Templeton Orchards Kindergarten

  • Rowville Kindergarten

  • Upper Ferntree Gully Kindergarten

While they aren’t operating next year, these centres have not been permanently closed.

Kindergarten service review update

A community panel representing the people of Knox recently finalised their work reviewing the options for the future of Council’s kindergarten services, in response to state government reforms and changing demand for sessional kindergarten.

The panel are helping Council to assess how we should respond to these changes to best support local families and provide value for ratepayers and the broader community. The panel’s statement will be presented to Council in the coming months and a decision is expected in mid-2023. If any services were to close as a result, this would not come into effect until at least December 2024.

This review and community panel has not changed our planning process for 2024 session times.

You can read more on the service review and subscribe to receive updates via our Have Your Say page.
